NEW DELHI, November 10, 2025 — A powerful car explosion near the historic Red Fort in India’s capital late Monday evening has killed at least eight people and injured several others, sending shockwaves through a densely populated area and prompting authorities to sound a high alert across Delhi and neighboring states.
The blast occurred in a parked four-wheeler near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station at approximately 7:05 p.m. local time.
The force of the explosion was reported to be significant, shattering windows in nearby buildings and immediately engulfing the primary vehicle in flames.
At least three to six other vehicles, including cars and auto-rickshaws, were damaged by the ensuing fire.
Delhi Police spokesman Sanjay Tyagi confirmed the casualty toll, stating that eight individuals were killed. Hospital officials at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that 15 people were brought in, with eight pronounced dead upon arrival. Several of the injured remain in serious condition.
The cause of the high-intensity blast remains unclear, and authorities have not yet ruled out any angle.
“We are investigating the cause of the blast,” Tyagi told the press, confirming that the area has been cordoned off as forensic teams examine the site.
Teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Given the location’s proximity to the globally recognized Red Fort, a major tourist attraction and former imperial palace, and several sensitive government installations, the city has been placed on high alert. Security measures have been tightened across Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh.
Eyewitness Accounts and Aftermath
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and panic following a sudden, window-shattering sound.
”I was at the gurdwara when I heard a strong sound. We couldn’t make out what it was, it was that loud,” one local resident told reporters.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) deployed seven fire tenders to the location, working quickly to extinguish the blaze that had spread across the parked vehicles. Visuals from the scene showed plumes of smoke billowing into the evening sky as police established a heavy cordon.
The explosion also comes just hours after police in the neighboring state of Haryana arrested a Kashmiri doctor and recovered a large cache of suspected explosive material and arms from his rented accommodation. Officials have not yet confirmed if there is any connection between the two incidents, but investigators are actively examining any potential links.
