LAGOS, Nigeria – Sixteen out of the 21 Local Government Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside 22 members of the State Executive Committee and 28 party aspirants across Anambra State, have distanced themselves from what they described as the “kangaroo grand entry” organised by factional chairman, Chief Ifeanyi Osegbo.
The party leaders and stakeholders reaffirmed their loyalty and allegiance to the State Chairman, Senator Emma Anosike, and his leadership team.
The mass show of support comes amid the lingering leadership crisis within the party following a Federal High Court process that sought to challenge Anosike’s leadership, a move the Anambra State APC executive had earlier dismissed as a “kangaroo judgment” that lacked the backing of genuine party stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Acting Chairman of the Forum of APC Local Government Chairmen and Chairman of APC in Awka North Local Government Area, Sir Johnbosco Aniaracha, said the affected local government chairmen, State Executive Committee members, and party aspirants deliberately stayed away from the event as a demonstration of their rejection of what they described as an orchestrated distraction aimed at undermining the constitutionally recognised leadership of the party in the state.
“We, the Local Government Chairmen of our great party, hereby distance ourselves, along with the State Working Committee of the party, from the kangaroo meeting organised by individuals who have been expelled from the party,”
“It is on record that those laying claim to the leadership of the party are the same individuals who took the party to court without exhausting the constitutional provisions and internal conflict resolution mechanisms provided by the party. Consequently, we cannot be part of the said meeting or the so-called historic takeover.”he said.
Aniaracha urged party faithful to remain calm and law-abiding, describing the development as the handiwork of fifth columnists determined to undermine the party’s chances in forthcoming elections.
“We urge party faithful to remain calm and law-abiding, as these are the machinations of fifth columnists who are out to scuttle the success of the party in the coming elections,” he said.
The stakeholders reiterated their unwavering commitment to the Senator Emma Anosike-led State Executive, insisting that Anosike and his team remain the only legitimate leadership recognised to manage the affairs of the APC in Anambra State.
They further maintained that any parallel structure or gathering outside the recognised leadership of the party amounts to a distraction and would not derail the APC’s preparations for the forthcoming National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government elections.
