Anambra State Executive Council okays creation of Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission, ASERC
The Anambra State Executive Council has approved the establishment of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC).
The approval was granted during the council’s 10th executive meeting held at government House . This move followed the recently enacted Anambra State Electricity Law, signed by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, which empowers the state to generate electricity and license investors interested in electricity generation within Anambra.
The Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Sir Julius Chukwuemeka, described the creation of ASERC as a major step in the right direction.
He stated that the commission would play a critical role in driving the state government’s agenda for improved power generation and distribution.
Chukwuemeka said that the commission would be responsible for regulating electricity generation and ensuring a steady supply of power across the state. According to him, the establishment of ASERC is a testament to Governor Soludo’s unwavering commitment to economic development, industrialization, and sustainable infrastructure in Anambra.
He further noted that ASERC would oversee the implementation of the Solution Government’s electricity policies.
“Its mandate includes facilitating investment in the power sector, encouraging private sector participation, and accelerating infrastructure development statewide.
It is important to recall that a Memorandum of Understanding between the Solution Government and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has already led to the local production of electricity prepaid meters in Ozubulu, Anambra State, helping to bridge the metering gap. Under the leadership of Governor Soludo, hundreds of transformers have been distributed to power-deprived communities across the state.
Anambra is also planning to establish Nigeria’s first electricity market. A new substation is currently under construction at the Igbariam campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).
In line with the Governor’s Clean and Green initiative, solar power systems,an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative have been installed in government buildings, including newly constructed water facilities throughout the state” he added.
