ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Residents of Obosi Urban community , Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have called for immediate redeployment of the Awada Divisional Police Officer, Barr. Lucky for his alleged inability to combat crimes in the area.
Addressing Journalists in Onitsha yesterday over the alleged constant armed robbery, snatching of handsets by motorcycle operatives and tricycle riders, a group, under the auspices of Concern Citizens of Obosi Urban (CCOU) regretted that since the assumption of duty by the present Divisional Police Officer, policing of the area has been very spongy hence the need for his redeployment.
“Obosi Urban made up of Awada, Ugwuagba, Oduke, Ibolo, Iyiukwu, Owelle Aja, Ozalla, amongst other layouts are no longer safe as the residents are being robbed on an hourly basis without the intervention of any security operatives. There is no day without a report of handsets snatching under gunpoint and we cannot fold our hands and see people being robbed because of the porous nature of the police operative .
*We are calling for the immediate redeployment of the DPO by the police authorities. What the DPO is after is gratification as he does not cares about the security of lives and property. Despite the insecurity in town, the DPO sends his men to go out on the roadblock for extortion. His directives led to the killing of a policeman and setting ablaze of a police van last Sunday,” CCOU alleged.
Asked why the vigilante group in the area has not been up to date in assisting the police in providing adequate security of lives and property In Obosi Urban, Concern Citizens of Obosi Urban (CCOU) stated that the DPO and the Vigilante group are like cat and rat, noting that the Divisional Police Officer and the Vigilante group never had a good working relationship.
“Our Vigilante group commanders are afraid to do the needful in the area because of the way the DPO has been dealing with them. Many of the Vigilante men are currently in prison yard via the actions of the DPO as the DPO frames them up in the slightest mistake and nobody would want to give his best in such condition.
According to him, “they may be compelled to embark on a public protest to press home their demand if the police authorities delay in listening to their request,”
