LAGOS, Nigeria – Former Minister of Information, Chief Alex Akinye is dead. He died on late Thursday evening. In a statement by Clementine Akinyele, one of his son, Chief Akinyele died after a brief illness.
Alex Akinyele, one of the most dressed gentleman in Nigeria also served as Chairman of the defunct National Sports Commission. A trained Public Relations expert, he was President of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations for many years.
Akinyele was born in in Ondo town. His fathere was a teacher who later served in the West African Frontier Force during the second world war.
Akinyele was educated at All Saints School, Ondo before moving to Gboluji Grammar School.
He also attended St Andrews College, Oyo, where he ontained his Teachers Training Certificate. Alex Akinyele also served as Senior Prefect at Saint Andrews College.
He taught briefly before proceding to University of Ife, where he obtained a degree in English language.
He went back into teaching and and transferred is service to the Department of Customs in Lagos in 1967. It was in Lagos that he began a script writing career. His first experience was joining others in writing the Iconic play, Village Headmaster.
