BERLIN – The film “Alaska,” written and directed by Max Gleschinski, won the Max Ophüls Prize for best feature film on Saturday evening at the festival that celebrates German-language films.

The film “Alaska,” written and directed by Max Gleschinski, won the Max Ophüls Prize for best feature film on Saturday evening at the festival that celebrates German-language films.

Gleschinski’s film tells the story of a loner who spends days gliding in a kayak through lakes in the former East Germany, before falling in love with another woman.

The prize, with an award worth €36,000 ($39,000), was presented before an audience after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The 44th edition of the festival presented a total of 18 awards for young filmmakers, with a total value of €118,500.

“Breaking the Ice” (A 2022) by Austrian Clara Stern received the most awards: for Best Screenplay, for Socially Relevant Film and for Youth Jury. It tells the story of the captain of an ice hockey team, who falls in love with a new player.
