ABUJA, Nigeria – Senator Ahmed Lawan has been elected President of the 9th Senate. He defeated the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) sponsored candidate, Senator Ali Ndume in an election held on the floor of the senate earlier today.

Ahmed secured 79 votes to defeat Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume who scored 28 votes. Both candidates addressed the Senate before voting began.

Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno-South had urged his colleagues to vote according to their conscience.

He said his decision to run was a tough one and there was a need for the Senate to be independent from the executive arm of government.
