Murtala Muhammed was born November 8th, 1938 in Kurawa Quarters, Kano State. He became head of state in July 30, 1975 and was assassinated in February 13th, 1976.

A great statesman, Murtala was not blinded by ethnic sentiment, upon becoming Head of State, Murtala proceeded to cancel the 1973 census which was lopsided to favor the North and adopted the 1963 figures as the accurate population of Nigeria.
