WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Kamala Harris issued a blistering rebuke of President Trump on Tuesday, accusing him of threatening to commit “war crimes” and warning that his administration’s escalating military confrontation with Iran has placed the United States on the precipice of a global catastrophe.

The statement, released as a self-imposed White House deadline for an Iranian ceasefire loomed, represents the most forceful condemnation yet from the former Vice President regarding the current administration’s Middle East policy. It follows a series of provocative social media posts by President Trump earlier in the day, in which he stated that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran does not capitulate to U.S. demands.

”The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a ‘whole civilization’ — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it,” Ms. Harris said in the statement. “This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this.”

The rhetoric highlights a deepening domestic rift over the conflict, which began earlier this year following the collapse of diplomatic channels and the subsequent U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. While the White House has framed the military action as a necessary measure for “Complete and Total Regime Change,” Ms. Harris and other leading Democrats have labeled the conflict an “illegal war of choice.”

Ms. Harris’s statement also focused on the domestic fallout of the conflict, linking the military campaign to the economic anxieties of American voters.

”Trump’s recklessness is needlessly putting our brave service members in harm’s way, destroying America’s global standing, and making life even more unaffordable for the American people,” the statement continued, referencing the recent spike in global oil prices and the resulting inflationary pressure on U.S. households.

The former Vice President’s call to “oppose funding” the war marks a significant shift toward a more aggressive legislative strategy for the Democratic minority in Congress. As casualties mount—with recent reports indicating the loss of 13 U.S. service members and hundreds of injuries—pressure is growing on Capitol Hill to exercise the Power of the Purse.

The White House has yet to formally respond to Ms. Harris’s allegations of war crimes, though President Trump remained defiant on Truth Social, characterizing the current moment as “one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World.”

International observers and human rights organizations have echoed Ms. Harris’s concerns, noting that targeting civilian infrastructure or cultural sites—implicit in the President’s “civilization” rhetoric—would constitute a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

”We must all stand against this,” Ms. Harris concluded.

For a nation already weary of decades of Middle Eastern entanglements, her words serve as a rallying cry for a burgeoning anti-war movement that is quickly becoming the central flashpoint of the 2026 political landscape.

The current hostilities erupted in early 2026 following the administration’s decision to launch “preemptive” strikes against Iranian nuclear and military facilities. The conflict has since expanded to include naval skirmishes in the Persian Gulf and a prolonged disruption of global energy supplies, leading to the highest gas prices in U.S. history.
