SOKOTO, Nigeria – Not less than 20 people were today killed and several others injured when dozens of gunmen believed to be Fulani Herdsmen invaded the Mailalle weekly market on Sunday.
According to Eyewitnesses, the herdsmen who invaded the market on motorbikes carted away foodstuffs and set several houses alight. We gathered that the herdsmen operated for several minutes without being challenged by anybody and even made a stop at a petrol station to refuel before they fled the area.
While confirming the incident, a resident of the area Alhaji Jelani Danbuga, said the gunmen, whom he said were about 200 shot sporadically and in the process killed and injured many, including, children, traders and some who had visited to make purchases.
He attributed the inability of security operative to shutdown of telecom services in some parts of the North.
It is not clear what is responsible for the attack, but local residents believe it is a reprisal attack by Fulani herdsmen, following an attack on Mammande Village of Gwadabawa local government on Thursday during which about 10 Fulani herdsmen were killed by local vigilante.
