ONITSHA, Nigeria –  Peoples Democratic Party PDP  Anambra State chapter on Wednesday banned executive members of the party from campaigning for aspirants  ahead of the 2021 governorship election in the state.

The state chairman of the party, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu  announced the ban  while receiving a governorship aspirant of the party,  Chief Wilson Udeh, at the party’s Secretariat in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

He said the measure affected all the officials of the party from state to the ward levels. While charging officials to maintain neutrality , he said any defaulter would  be sanctioned as appropriate. He said from experience such parochial support for individual aspirants had been the bane of the party in the state in winning elections .

“Any official who attaches himself to a particular aspirant will be sanctioned. It’s our resolve that officials of the party should remain neutral until after the primaries of the party when all of us shall come out in unison to support our candidate for the election.

“By so doing, we shall not be factionalised before the main election. Experience has taught us that if we attach ourselves to individual aspirants, if our choice aspirant fails in the primaries, we will abandon the general cause because the person we are supporting is  no longer in contention. That should stop” he said.

Nwobu assured every aspirant in the party of equal level playing field;  transparent and credible primaries in next year’s poll. Addressing the executive committee of the party , Udeh said as a United States trained lawyer and architect, he had the training and experience to transform the state to an enviable height.

“I have not come  hear to promise you that I will build 21 universities in the state if elected. That’s not why I’m here. But all I will tell you today is that if elected  governor in 2021 ugly faces in this state will be made  beautiful and happy,” he said.
