PORT HARCOURT, Rivers,Nigeria – The Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Dr. Akwagaga Lelegima Enyia, has stressed the importance of effective security surveillance in government organisations.

Dr Enyia, who spoke at the opening of a two-day training for NDDC’s in-house security personnel at Juanita Hotel, Port Harcourt yesterday, said that the Commission would continue to leverage on its core values to create opportunities for the workforce to upgrade their competences and specialties.

The training, with the theme: “Effective Security Surveillance, Report Writing and Information Management,” was facilitated by the Nigerian Institute for Industrial Security, NIIS.

According to the NDDC Chief Executive Officer, the security personnel, as first-line gate-keepers, must function in tandem with modern operational standards. She said that the focus on global trends in surveillance was meant to enhance the capability of the NDDC to safeguard lives and protect its assets and prospects.

The NDDC boss stated that the Commission would keep pace with current security measures through manpower upgrading in skills and professional proficiency.

She noted: “At the end of this training, personnel would be abreast with the fundamentals of surveillance; be conversant with tips and procedures for successful results; master face-to-face contact procedures during surveillance; understand writing professional reports; and, appropriate how to manage information during surveillance.

Dr Enyia emphasized the need for organizations to protect their physical or information assets by empowering their employees with adequate security training, stating that security personnel were expected to report emergency situations in their organisations without exposing themselves.

She said: “In recent times, as a Commission, we have faced daily, violent protests that threatened our daily operations. Even as we contend with external threats, our filing system suffers unimaginable breaches, as official transactions fall into unofficial hands.

“The Commission suffers external infiltration and internal sabotage, two collaborative evils which I expect participants in this programme to acquire the skills needed to exorcise.”

In his presentation, the Executive Secretary of NIIS, Mr Wilson Esangbedo, said that the training programme was meant to expose the participants to the best practices in security surveillance and information management in a corporate environment. “We want to blend what is happening at the local level with the best global practices,” Esangbedo said.
