Meanwhile the State Government has said it would no longer accept the non-compliance by residents as anyone caught during the sanitation hours would henceforth face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, decried the abuse of the Environmental Sanitation Restriction of Movement Order by private and commercial vehicles stating that government would henceforth evoke the zero tolerance policy against human and vehicular movements during sanitation hours.
He urged Lagosians to troop out in large numbers and actively participate in the statewide exercise, stressing that efforts should be further concentrated on the cleaning of drains and canals in our immediate environment. According to him, “we call on the people of the state to complement the effort of the State Government by cleaning tertiary drains/gutters in their frontages and neighbourhood regularly not just only on monthly environmental sanitation days”.
He advised lagosians to embrace the Waste Management policy of the State Government through the patronage of LAWMA/PSP operators for the disposal of their solid waste.
He urged residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from this illegal act as it is inimical to the waste management policy of the State Government, because whatever refuse cart pushers collect end up inside canals to cause flooding.
Tunji Bello also warned interstate Bus Operators, Luxurious Bus Operators, Transport Owners and Road Transport Workers Association to comply with the restriction of Human/vehicular movement order between 7.00am-10.00am as any vehicle caught violating this order would be dealt with appropriately, while passengers in such vehicles would be prosecuted according to the State Environmental Sanitation Laws.
He further stated that Law Enforcement Agents including Nigeria Police and officials from LASTMA and KAI had been fully mobilized for the exercise.
