MCSN GETS NODE TO OPERATE AS A COLLECTING SOCIETY FOR MUSIC IN NIGERIA
IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – The Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, (MCSN) has been approved as a collecting society bringing the number collecting society approved for music to two.
Prior to this development, the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON operates as the sole collecting society for music in Nigeria.
MCSN Chairman, Orits Wiliki said the Ministry of Justice has granted it official license to operate as a collecting society on behalf of owners of music works in Nigeria.
The veteran reggae act told newsmen that the license was given by the Attorney-General of the federation and Minister for Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami on March 22, when he issued a directive to the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).
Orits Wiliki said the approval of the license will no doubt breathe new life into the economic growth of the Nigerian music industry.
The MCSN Chairman also revealed that the body will now have the power to collect royalties on behalf of music practitioners, even in arrears.
Meanwhile, the Attorney-General has also issued a directive that all existing court cases concerning legality of collecting societies must be withdrawn with immediate effect.
