Nigeria, August 17, 2016 – Police in Ogun State are preparing to charge an Igbo trader, Mr. Joe Fortemose Chinakwe to court for naming his dog Buhari.
POLICE TO CHARGE TO COURT IGBO TRADER WHO NAMED HIS DOG BUHARI
Chinakwe(30) who lives No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State was arrested at the weekend when his Hausa neighbor living in the area, Alhaji Buhari complained bitterly that Chinakwe named his dog Buhari whom he said is the name of his father.
Alhaji Buhari had told officers at the Sango Police Station that he was bitter that Chinakwe not only named his dog Buhari but also went ahead to make a bold platelike label which he hung on both side of dog with the name BUHARI boldly written in upper case.
The trader, we gathered who sells female wears at a popular market in the area allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog when he learnt that his neighbor had reported the matter to the police.
We learnt that appeal for bail had fallen on deaf ear since the aggrieved Alhaji Buhari had threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail.
However, Acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed that the man in questioned bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body.
“One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace,” he told Vanguard.
