Safety Issue: Lagos shuts Cobel Construction Company
October 08, 2015 – The Lagos State Safety Commission has issued a Stop – Work – Order to Cobel Construction Company, Lagos Island for non compliance with the stipulated safety standards in work place environment after a recent inspection exercise to the organisation.
The Director General of the Commission, Mr. Fouad Oki, who gave the directive, said the order was issued after a series of abatement notices were served without compliance by the said company.
Oki expressed displeasure over the indifferent attitude demonstrated by the management of Cobel, stressing that the commission will not condone a total disregard and non-compliance with stipulated guidelines on safety thereby engendering the lives of workers.
According to Oki, “The inspection exercise is not aimed at stopping companies from making profit or doing business but essentially to give workers the benefit of enjoying the gains of their labour in good health and mental well-being”.
He, however, disclosed that the Commission is working on ensuring prompt compliance by Cobel Construction Company and other erring companies facing similar order.
He therefore called on members of the public to report any safety issues or concern to the Lagos State Safety Commission at Block 18b Secretariat, Alausa or call 07046494972 for prompt and necessary action.
It will be recalled that a similar order was given to Hongxing Steel Company Limited last week over safety violations which had resulted in the death of a casual worker of the company, Mr. Emeka Umoh.
