Update: Dogara 48, elected Speaker House of Representatives
June 9, 2015 – Hon Yakubu Dogara(48) today emerged Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was elected at about 4:30 pm.
The House erupted even before official results were declared as shouts of supporters of Dogara filled the air with many jumping and jubilating on discovering that the ballot box containing votes cast in favour of Dogara were more.
He polled 182 votes to defeat Femi Gbajabiamila who polled 174 votes out of 361 votes cast.
Dogara was nominated by the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though Dogara is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) while the APC nominated Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Born December 26, 1967, Dogara represents Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa-Balewa Federal Constituency. He was educated at University of Jos, Plateau State, where he obtained a Bachelor of Law (LLB Hons.) degree in 1992. He was also at the Nigerian Law School for practical training.
He later obtained a Masters (LLM) in International Commercial Law at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland.
Dogara has chaired several committees in the House. He was Chairman, House Committee on Customs and Excise, and the House Services and Welfare. He was also a member of the House committees on Judiciary, Capital Markets and Institutions, Foreign Affairs, Rural Development and Power, Land Transport, Labour, Employment and Productivity, Steel Development, and Legislative Budget and Research among others.
