LAGOS — The ongoing legal dispute surrounding the paternity of Liam Aloba, the son of late Afrobeats musician Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, experienced another pause as the court adjourned proceedings to November 16, 2026.
The adjournment follows fresh concerns submitted by the singer’s family regarding the integrity and transparency of the proposed DNA testing process.
During the court session, legal representatives acting on behalf of the family seeking to join the suit raised critical questions over how DNA samples would be gathered, preserved, and analyzed.
The legal counsel pointed out past procedural delays, citing instances where previous sample handling took several months, ultimately yielding inconclusive results.
Speaking on behalf of the family alongside the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, the legal team reiterated that the family is not trying to delay or avoid the paternity test.
Instead, they are demanding strict adherence to verifiable protocols—including transparent sample collection and the involvement of credible independent laboratories—to prevent tampering and ensure conclusive outcomes.
Presiding over the matter, the court ruled to adjourn the case to November 16 to allow all interested parties to formalize and argue their pending applications regarding the selection of testing facilities and chain of custody procedures.
The death of 27-year-old Afrobeats star Mohbad on September 12, 2023, sparked widespread public outcry, intense social media debates, and calls for an exhaustive investigation into the circumstances leading to his sudden demise.
Shortly after his passing, public scrutiny shifted toward the paternity of his young son, Liam, who was born to the late singer’s partner, Wunmi. Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, along with various online commentators and social critics, maintained that a definitive DNA test was necessary to clarify paternity before the singer’s final burial rites could proceed and before the estate could be settled.
The court had previously ordered a paternity test to resolve the dispute.
However, the process has faced continuous setbacks, ranging from disagreements over the choice of medical facilities to legal arguments over post-mortem tissue sampling procedures. While Wunmi’s legal team has repeatedly insisted on adherence to court directives and accused the opposing side of stalling, Joseph Aloba’s legal team maintains that a compromised test would undermine justice for the late artist.
With the matter now adjourned until November 16, key stakeholders and fans await the court’s direction on how the DNA verification process will proceed.
