LAGOS, Nigeria – THE STARS illuminated the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on a electric afternoon in Lagos as Ikorodu City put on a footballing masterclass to sink Kwara United 2-0 in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
From the very first whistle, the home side looked every inch a team destined for glory, driven forward by standard-setting individual displays across every blade of grass. The star man of the afternoon was undoubtedly Farouk Salami, whose early lightning strike sent the Lagos crowd into raptures and set the tempo for an emphatic victory.
It took just two minutes for Salami to write his name into the headlines. Capitalizing on a momentary lapse in the Kwara defensive line, the talismanic forward leaped highest in the box to convert a beautifully flighted cross, giving Ikorodu City a dream start and leaving the visitors shell-shocked before they had even settled into their rhythm.
While Salami grabbed the early spotlight, the engine room was run by Ikorodu’s stellar midfield generals, who dictated play with authority and composure. Kwara United struggled to cope with the quick passing and movement, repeatedly finding themselves pegged back in their own half.
The pressure paid off once again just minutes before the half-time break.
Ikechukwu Junior produced a moment of star quality, rising gracefully above a sea of defender heads to double Ikorodu’s lead with a powerful header. The goal gave the hosts a comfortable 2-0 cushion heading into the tunnel and put the match virtually out of reach.
The second half saw Kwara United attempt a fightback, but Ikorodu’s defensive stars proved resolute, snuffing out every attack and preserving their prized clean sheet. Kwara’s miserable afternoon went from bad to worse in the 86th minute when defender Saheed Olaniyi was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle, receiving his marching orders and leaving the Harmony Boys down to ten men for the closing stages.
In terms of match statistics, Ikorodu City dominated the contest across the board.
The home side commanded roughly 60 percent of the overall ball possession, showcasing their superiority in midfield control. Ikorodu registered 14 total shot attempts, with 6 finding the target, forcing key saves from the opposition goalkeeper. In contrast, Kwara United managed just 6 total shots, with only 2 tested on target—both comfortably dealt with by the Ikorodu shot-stopper.
Passing metrics further highlighted Ikorodu’s dominance, as the hosts completed over 380 passes with an impressive accuracy rate near 82 percent, compared to Kwara’s 260 completed passes. Corner kicks reflected Ikorodu’s constant attacking threat, with the Lagos outfit earning 7 corners to Kwara United’s 3.
Disciplinary discipline also tipped the scales, with Kwara United committing 16 fouls and picking up 3 yellow cards along with Saheed Olaniyi’s late red card, whereas Ikorodu City committed 10 fouls and received just a single yellow card throughout the entire 90 minutes.
When the final referee’s whistle blew, the scoreboard read a thoroughly deserved 2-0 to Ikorodu City. The Lagos outfit collected all three points in style, propelled by standout star performances that will have NPFL title rivals watching closely.
