In a fresh revelation reflecting on his long-standing record of financial transparency and private enterprise, the former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has disclosed how he satisfied an inquiry by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding an offshore real estate acquisition.
Speaking on his pre-political wealth and history of corporate transactions, Obi revealed that anti-graft operatives previously requested an explanation regarding a property he acquired in the United Kingdom.
The presidential candidate noted that he easily cleared the air by presenting documentary evidence showing that the asset was fully paid for long before he held any public office.
“EFCC called me to explain a house I bought in 1996, 10 years before I became Governor. I gave them the receipt of full payment: £1 million,” Obi stated.
A Legacy of Corporate Enterprise
The declaration underscores Obi’s long-standing narrative as an established businessman who accumulated significant private wealth prior to entering public service.
Before his entry into politics, Obi served as the Chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc and held executive board positions across multiple blue-chip financial institutions, import-export ventures, and corporate enterprises across Africa and Europe.
Obi was elected Governor of Anambra State in 2003, though he officially took office in March 2006 following a prolonged legal victory that ousted the declared winner.
His tenure ended in 2014, during which he gained national acclaim for maintaining a lean governance structure, declining executive privileges, and leaving substantial fiscal reserves in the state treasury.
Anti-Graft Scrutiny and Financial Integrity
Over the years, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has maintained oversight on former state executives and high-profile political figures across Nigeria. Obi’s experience highlights a recurring theme in Nigerian politics, where public officials are called upon to account for assets owned at home and abroad.
However, unlike many typical political anti-graft inquiries that center on diverted public funds, Obi emphasized that the asset in question predates his entire political trajectory by a decade.
According to the former governor, providing a complete paper trail—including proof of full payment executed in 1996—was sufficient to clear up any suspicion surrounding the property.
Obi’s supporters and political analysts have consistently pointed to his pre-political financial background as evidence that his wealth was derived from commercial trade and corporate appointments rather than government coffers.
Calls for Institutional Transparency
In his remarks, Obi reiterated his commitment to transparency, maintaining that public figures must always be prepared to open their financial records to institutional scrutiny.
He urged anti-graft agencies to continue performing their constitutional duties fairly and without political bias, while advocating for a political culture rooted in accountability, verifiable earnings, and character.
The former governor reaffirmed that true leadership requires personal integrity, asserting that individuals seeking to manage public resources must first demonstrate clean financial stewardship in their private lives.
