OSOGBO — The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, has called on the Inspector General of Police and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 11, CP Tunji Disu, to urgently investigate continuous threats against his life, his constituents, and members of his party following a security breach in Okuku, Odo Otin Local Government Area.
Speaker Egbedun made the call while refuting online reports surrounding the pursuit and attempted attack on the Executive Chairman of Odo Otin Local Government, Hon. Adewale Adeyinka, by unidentified individuals.
Addressing the incident, Egbedun disclosed that he received an urgent distress call from the Local Government Chairman while returning from a press conference at the State House of Assembly complex in Osogbo. The Chairman reported being pursued by a three-vehicle convoy allegedly linked to political actors in the area.
”Upon hearing of the pursuit and the imminent danger to his life, I immediately instructed him to make his way to the Okuku Divisional Police Station, which was the safest place for him to seek protection,” Egbedun stated.
The Speaker noted that upon his arrival at the station with his security detail, he discovered that members of the public had apprehended two individuals and recovered a firearm from them.
To prevent mob action or summary violence, Egbedun directed his Chief Detail to secure the suspects and place them in official custody. The two individuals, along with the recovered firearm and ammunition, were subsequently transferred to Osogbo and handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for full investigation.
Reiterating his stance on public safety, Speaker Egbedun condemned efforts by political opponents to distort the narrative on social media. He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct an impartial investigation into the suspects, the origin of the seized firearm, and the ownership of the vehicles involved in the pursuit.
He added that the incident highlights the pressing need for the Inspector General of Police to act on earlier viral videos containing explicit threats against his life and political associates.
”Political differences must never become a justification for violence, intimidation, or attempts to endanger human lives,” Egbedun declared. “As Speaker, I remain committed to the protection of lives, the rule of law, and peaceful development. I will not be intimidated by threats or violence.”
The Speaker urged stakeholders across Osun State to resolve political disagreements through lawful democratic participation and the ballot box rather than violence.
