A SCHOOLBOY aged just 14 has been charged with terror offences over an alleged extreme right-wing plot to attack two south London mosques.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested by counter-terrorism officers following a raid at an address in south London. He has been remanded in custody and is set to face a judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The shocking charges have sent waves of anxiety through the local community, sparking urgent police patrols and calls for vigilance.
The fast-moving investigation began as a routine local police inquiry. On Thursday, July 9, officers descended on a residential address in south London to arrest the 14-year-old boy.
The initial arrest was in connection with a racially aggravated incident on June 20, where a car window was smashed in the Sutton area.
However, when specialist officers searched the property, the case took a dark and dramatic turn.
Inside the home, investigators uncovered “documents of concern” that immediately triggered the involvement of Counter Terrorism Policing London (CTP). The boy was swiftly re-arrested under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.
Following days of intense questioning and a warrant for further detention granted on July 11, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised two formal charges against the youth:
Preparation of Terrorist Acts: Engaging in conduct between June and July 2026 with the intention of carrying out acts of terrorism, specifically targeting two mosques in Sutton.
Racially Aggravated Criminal Damage: Unlawfully damaging a car window on June 20, 2026, with racial motivation.
”Deeply Concerning” Rise in Child Extremism
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the alleged plot was linked to extreme right-wing terrorism. Security officials have reached out to the targeted mosques in Sutton to offer specialized security advice and reassurance.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London, expressed her deep worry over the age of the suspect:
“This is a very serious terrorism charge against a young boy and likely to be highly concerning to the public and the local community.
While it is deeply concerning to see someone so young charged with offences of this nature, we are sadly seeing an increasing number of children and young people in our casework.”
Communities on High Alert
The charges come at a time of heightened anxiety for British Muslims. Just days earlier, 12 people were arrested in Suffolk over a suspected threat to an Islamic festival, while another man was arrested following an assault outside a mosque in Leyton, east London.
Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn, head of local policing for south London, acknowledged the heavy toll these incidents are taking.
”We should not underestimate the cumulative impact of incidents of this nature on the Muslim community,” Blackburn said. “We have increased patrols in the affected areas, which we will look to continue over coming days.”
Police have reassured the public that there is “no enduring or wider threat” to the community regarding this specific case, and detectives are not looking for any other suspects.
