BY OUR MAN AT THE CITY GROUND
THE title race takes another twist, and once again, it’s the chaos-bringer himself, Darwin Nunez, providing the sting in the tail.
In a game that looked destined to end in a frustrating stalemate, the Uruguayan marksman rose highest in the 99th minute to nod home a cross from the sublime Alexis Mac Allister, sending the traveling Kop into a frenzy and leaving Nottingham Forest absolutely gutted.
While Nunez grabbed the headlines, this was a victory built on the shoulders of Liverpool’s big-game performers:
DARWIN NUNEZ: Coming off the bench on the hour mark, he transformed the Reds’ frontline.
His persistence paid off when he out-muscled the Forest defense to flick home the winner with the final kick of the game.
ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER: The World Cup winner was the calmest man in the stadium. As the clock ticked past the allotted eight minutes of injury time, he kept his head, recycled a half-cleared corner, and delivered a peach of a ball onto Nunez’s head.
CAOIMHIN KELLEHER: Liverpool’s “deputy” keeper was anything but. He produced a massive one-on-one save against Anthony Elanga in the first half that kept the Reds in the hunt.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s men fought like lions. Murillo was a titan at the back, and Anthony Elanga’s pace haunted Ibrahima Konate all afternoon. But the home side was left incensed by referee Paul Tierney’s decision to award Liverpool a drop-ball shortly before the goal, despite Forest being in possession when play was stopped for a head injury.
As the final whistle blew, the City Ground was a cauldron of boos, but for Jurgen Klopp, it was another “monster” performance from his injury-hit squad.
