BRUSSELS has delivered a “love me or lose me” ultimatum to war-torn Ukraine, warning President Volodymyr Zelensky that he must give the green light to LGBTQ+ rights if he wants a seat at the EU table.
In a move set to spark a firestorm in the socially conservative nation, the European Commission has ruled that Ukraine must “protect and recognize” same-sex couples to prove it is ready for membership.
Euro-chiefs warned that “compliance with human rights principles” is now a non-negotiable hurdle in the country’s bid to join the bloc. The move puts Zelensky in a tight spot as he tries to balance Western liberal demands with a home front still deeply influenced by traditional church values.
Sources in Brussels say the Commission’s latest progress report makes it crystal clear: no civil unions, no entry. The “Fundamentals First” policy means Ukraine cannot close its membership deal until it matches EU standards on anti-discrimination.
One EU official said: “We aren’t just looking at tanks and trade. We are looking at the heart of their laws. If you want the blue flag with yellow stars, you need the rainbow too.”
Zelensky’s Tightrope
The Ukrainian leader has previously hinted he is open to “civil partnerships,” especially for gay soldiers fighting on the front lines against Russia.
However, he has also played for time, stating that the Ukrainian constitution—which defines marriage as between a man and a woman—cannot be changed while the country is under martial law.
Critics say the “Brussels decree” could play right into the hands of Vladimir Putin, who has long used “Western decadence” as a propaganda tool to justify his invasion.
