GAZA— The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip issued a press statement on World Children’s Day, accusing the “Israeli” occupation of committing “the largest act of genocide against children in the present century” and detailing a catastrophic humanitarian situation affecting the region’s youth.
The statement, identified as Press Statement No. (1023), asserts that the ongoing conflict has systematically targeted Palestinian children, leaving over one million children in Gaza under the threat of death, hunger, and disease. It claims that the actions constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The office provided a breakdown of figures intended to document the scale of the tragedy:
Fatalities: The statement claims more than 20,000 children have been “martyred,” which it describes as the world’s largest crime against children this century. This includes 1,015 infants under one year old, and over 450 infants born and subsequently martyred during the period of the alleged genocide.
Starvation and Cold: The statement alleges that 154 children have died from hunger due to the “suffocating siege” and prevention of food and baby formula, calling this a “crime that clearly constitutes genocide by starvation used as a weapon of war.” An additional 14 children are reported to have died from cold in forced-displacement camps.
Injuries and Disability: The media office claims over 864 children have lost limbs due to direct bombardment, describing this as the largest wave of mass disabilities among children in modern Palestinian history. It also noted that over 5,200 children require urgent medical evacuation.
Risk of Starvation and Orphanhood
The statement warned of widespread starvation, stating that 650,000 children are at risk of “slow death by hunger” and that 40,000 infants are at risk due to a lack of baby formula.
Furthermore, the office recorded more than 56,348 orphaned children who have lost one or both parents, labeling this “one of the largest waves of orphanhood caused by a single war in modern times.” These children, the statement claims, are now facing collective trauma without shelter or protection.
Demands for International Action
In light of the figures, the Government Media Office issued several strong affirmations and demands:
Condemnation: A strong condemnation of the occupation’s “ongoing targeting, killing, starvation, and deprivation” of children.
Responsibility: Holding the occupation “fully responsible for all crimes committed against children.”
Call to Action: An appeal to the international community, the UN Security Council, the United Nations, and UNICEF to “fulfill their moral and legal obligations” and take immediate steps to protect Gaza’s children, ensuring the entry of essential supplies without restrictions.
Investigation: A demand for an independent international investigation into the alleged genocide and deliberate killing of children, seeking accountability for “Israeli” war criminals before international justice.
Medical Evacuation: Stressing the urgent need for medical evacuation for thousands of children.
The office asserted that Gaza’s children are “the victims of the most brutal genocide of this century” and that global silence has encouraged the occupation to escalate its actions.
