FC Utrecht 2 – 1 AFC Ajax

AMSTERDAM- The Eredivisie took a truly unbelievable turn yesterday as giant-killers FC Utrecht put Ajax to the sword, securing a stunning 2-1 victory at their intimidating home ground, the Stadion Galgenwaard.
The ‘Farmers’ (as Ajax’s rivals cheekily call them) were meant to roll over the home side, but instead, they were rolled over in a cauldron of noise that the Galgenwaard is famous for.
For a club like Ajax, this isn’t just a loss; it’s a massive embarrassment in a stadium that has become a notorious graveyard for their title hopes.
Utrecht, who have been on a shaky run, turned the Galgenwaard into a fortress of noise and passion, creating a ferocious atmosphere that clearly rattled the star-studded visitors. Matisse Didden, netting the opener just before half-time, sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
Sebastien Haller, a name that will be familiar to West Ham fans, doubled the lead for the home side with a towering header in the second half, leaving the Ajax backline looking utterly bewildered. Even a late consolation goal couldn’t save Ajax’s blushes.
The Stadion Galgenwaard—which literally translates to “Gallows Field Stadium”—lived up to its grim name for the Amsterdam giants. It’s now the third consecutive time Utrecht has beaten Ajax at this venue, turning what should be an away-day formality into a genuine nightmare fixture.
Managerless Ajax are in full-blown crisis mode. They’ve gone from Champions League hopefuls to a team utterly incapable of handling the heat of a smaller stadium on a Sunday afternoon.
FC Utrecht now leapfrog their rivals and can proudly tell their fans they’ve hung the mighty Ajax out to dry!
The famous Amsterdam club are now facing an inquest, with many asking: “If they can’t win at the Galgenwaard, where can they win?”
