OJO, Lagos – The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday officially commissioned the state-of-the-art Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, restating his administration’s unwavering commitment to educational improvement and investing in the minds of young Lagosians.
The massive new facility has been hailed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, as the biggest library in any university across West Africa.
A Digital Gateway to Global Knowledge
The newly constructed complex is designed as a state-of-the-art facility, offering students access to cutting-edge technology, digital research facilities, and innovation labs, aligning with the Governor’s focus on technology and education as the “twin engines of development” under the THEMES+ Agenda.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the library represents a critical investment in the future of the state.
”This Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex stands as a testament to Lagos State’s unwavering commitment to intellectual empowerment,” the Governor said. “It is our collective declaration that Lagos will never stop investing in minds, because it is the trained mind that conceives invention, builds bridges, heals wounds, writes history, and redefines tomorrow.”
He emphasised that the structure is not merely a monument, but a “symbol of service,” stressing that his administration continues to nurture a generation of “thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers” through initiatives like the EkoDigital program and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, celebrated the commissioning as a significant milestone for the institution. She praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support, affirming that the new library complex is indeed the largest of its kind in any university across the West African sub-region.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to human capital development, urging other state governments to emulate the model set by the Governor. He described the library as an architectural masterpiece aimed at establishing Lagos as a centre for educational development.
The State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, reinforced that the edifice signifies the government’s resolve to foster academic research and innovation within the university environment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded by imploring the LASU community to safeguard the library and utilize it as the core of their academic pursuits, assuring young Lagosians that the state believes in their potential.
