MEDITERRANEAN SEA – Israeli forces have intercepted a flotilla attempting to sail to Gaza, detaining more than 200 participants from 37 countries, according to a spokesperson for the mission.
The Global Sumud Flotilla spokesperson, Saif Abukeshek, confirmed the mass detention in an update posted on Instagram, stating that Israeli occupation forces had intercepted 13 boats at sea.
Abukeshek reported that the detained individuals numbered over 201 and represented a wide range of nationalities, including large contingents such as 30 from Spain, 22 from Italy, 21 from Turkey, and 12 from Malaysia.
Despite the detentions and the loss of vessels, Abukeshek insisted that the group’s “mission is going on.”
He affirmed that other vessels are continuing to sail “through the Mediterranean to break the siege on Gaza,” suggesting the full extent of the flotilla’s presence and plans may not yet be concluded.
The incident marks a significant escalation in attempts by international activists to reach the Gaza Strip by sea and challenge the Israeli naval blockade, which Israel maintains is necessary for security purposes.
