Couple, other sentenced to community service for theft of N5 million

YABA, Lagos – A Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Lagos, has sentenced a couple and one other to 18 months in prison and 200 hours of community service for stealing N5 million.
The convicts – Warris Matti; 27, Adeyemi Olaiya; 32 and Anifat Matti; 25, were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and stealing.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Salawu, who sentenced the trio after several trials and facts presented in court, held that their sentence should start immediately.
Salawu, who gave no option of fine, ordered that the first and second convicts be sentenced to 18 months in prison, while she sentenced the third convict to 200 hours of community service.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the case was first reported on March 26, 2024.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the trio and some others committed the offences on October 26, 2023, at No 58, Clover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Oriabure submitted that Warris and Olaiya, who worked as sales representative and supervisor at Hans and Rene, conspired to steal a total of N5 million from their employer.
He explained that Warris fraudulently got customers to pay directly into his wife’s Opay account which he linked to Hans and Rene.
