BERLIN – German racing driver Mick Schumacher has had a meeting with Mattia Binotto, the chief operating officer of the future Audi Formula One team, as he hopes to return to the grid.
German car makers Audi will fully take over Switzerland-based team Kick Sauber in 2026, and the team offers the only remaining vacancy for 2025 and is looking to a team-mate to Nico Hülkenberg.
“I told him that nothing has been decided so far,” Binotto told broadcasters Sky on the sidelines of the United States Grand Prix this weekend. “It has to be a logical decision, not an emotional one.”
Binotto again stressed that Schumacher is one of the candidates to become a Audi driver, “but I can’t say anything more at the moment.”
He added that he knows Schumacher very well from their time at Ferrari, when Binotto served as team principal and Schumacher was part of their driver’s academy.
“I think we understand each other very well,” Binotto said.
Schumacher, the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, drove in F1 at the Haas team in 2021 and 2022.
He is now a Mercedes reserve driver and also competes for Alpine in the Endurance World Championship.
