Tinubu’s broadcast on end hunger protest, the highlights

LAGOS, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu on Sunday morning made a national broadcast to Nigerians to address those involved in the #EndHunger and #EndBadgovernance protest,   acknowledging that the citizens’ right to peaceful protest.

But his address failed to touch on salient demands of the aggrieved Nigerians who are still in the street protesting.

Tinubu  emphasized  that a democratic government relies on the people’s freedom of expression. He encouraged protesters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid any actions that could trigger chaos or violence.

The President who used the opportunity  speak on what he has been doing since he assumed office aso addressed the economic challenges facing the nation, attributing them to global imbalances and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tinubu highlighted his administration’s efforts to curb inflation, improve security, and provide essential services to Nigerians adding that his government inherited an economy that was almost running into bankruptsy.

The President unveiled a series of measures to assuage the citizens’ concerns, including a significant reduction in the pump price of fuel, aiming to alleviate the burden on Nigerians.

The formation of a Special Committee on poverty alleviation, tasked with developing strategies to enhance the welfare of the citizenry.

A commitment to improving the education sector, with plans for teacher training and school infrastructure upgrades.

Enhanced security measures, including the recruitment of additional security personnel and the acquisition of advanced equipment to combat insurgency and other security challenges.

Tinubu appealed to the protesters to reconsider their plans, believing that constructive engagement is a better approach than demonstrations. He expressed openness to receiving delegations from the protest organizers to dialogue and find common ground.

The President emphasized the importance of unity and urged Nigerians to prioritize the nation’s progress over personal interests. He highlighted his administration’s inclusivity and commitment to building a unified nation.

Finally, Tinubu warned against the dangers of misinformation and political manipulation, urging Nigerians to verify the sources of their information and avoid being misled. He emphasized that his government would not tolerate any actions that threaten the country’s peace and unity.

This presidential broadcast was well-received by some citizens who appreciated the measures outlined to alleviate their struggles. However, others remained skeptical, emphasizing the need for tangible actions and sustained change. The protest organizers maintained their plans, urging participants to remain peaceful while expressing their discontent.
