Nigerians protest bad governance defying heavy security, threats by hired thugs

LAGOS – Nigerians today stormed the streets despite heavy security presence and threat by hired thugs, protesting an end to hunger and bad governance in the country.  Today is the first day of the 10 day protest  slated from August 1-10, 2024.

The aggrieved youths came out in large numbers in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcour, Kano, Kaduna, Edo State, Bayelsa State, Bauchi and other areas across the federation bearing placards, deploying the current state of things in the country.

The aggrieved youths armed themselves with  placards, detailing their demands, among which is “Bring back fuel subsidy ;  The Suffering is too much; immediate clean up of the Niger Delta; Reverse the fuel price;  Reverse skyrocketing Disco tariffs; End hunger’, among others.

In Lagos, the aggrieved youths marched from Ikeja to Government House Alausa, while others converged at Ojota outside the Gani Fawehinmi  Park to vent their anger, calling on government to put an end to bad governance which has exacerbated the present high cost of living.

There were also a group of thugs hired by agents of government who attempted to infiltrate and cause violence at  Ojota but they were ignored by the peaceful protest of Nigerian youths.

At Agege, a group of thugs gathered urging genuine Nigerians agitating for betterment of the society to go home, stressing that there was no hunger in Nigeria.

In Lekki, there was no protest, though there were heavy presence of security men and soldiers at the Lekki Tollgate, there was also no sign of protest at Victoria Island and Falomo axis but the presence of security men. There were very few vehicles in the street, while the whole road was almost empty of life.

In Abuja, policemen fired tear gas and live ammunition at some protesters found near the Eagle Square, but that did not stop Nigerians from venting their anger at the present government.  The federal secretariat was also shut.

In Bayelsa, there were also two groups of protesters, the pro-government thugs who blocked the passage of the peaceful protesters. Nigerians also came out in Edo State to protest  and an end to hunger and bad governance.
