BERLIN – Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané has undergone groin surgery shortly after Germany’s exit from the Euro 2024, the Bild newspaper and broadcasters Sky reported on Monday.
Sané has been dealing with pubic bone issues for some time and according to the reports, he hopes to be able to be recovered at the end of July.
Despite the long-standing injury, Sané was called up by coach Julian Nagelsmann to Germany’s home Euros. The hosts, however, were eliminated following a 2-1 defeat to Spain after extra time in the quarter-finals.
Sané started the game against Spain but was subbed off during half-time due to the pain.
He will now hope to be free of pain to start the season with Bayern under new coach Vincent Kompany, whom he knows from his time at Manchester City in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has invited the Germany national team to the chancellor’s office in a phone conversation with coach Julian Nagelsmann on Sunday, according to government sources.
A date hasn’t been set yet. Scholz would like to honour the players with a special gesture despite the Euro 2024 exit in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat to Spain in extra time.
Scholz was in attendance against Spain, as well as in three other Euro 2024 matches. The only game he missed was the opening match against Scotland because he was at the G7 summit in Italy.
