BERLIN – Star German actress Sandra Hüller will this summer take over the sponsorship of a migrant rescue ship, the Sea-Eye 5, which will operate in the Mediterranean Sea.

“Everyone has a right to freedom, peace and security. I want to help ensure that people in need receive the help they urgently need,” said Hüller, best known for starring roles in the recent award-winning films “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest.”

The ship has been operating off the coast of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein for the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association.

Three other ships are already operating in the Mediterranean for the private German aid organization Sea-Eye.

The organization estimated the purchase price of the 35-year-old cruiser at around €465,000 ($499,000), which is to be financed by donations.

The central Mediterranean is a main route for people from Africa who want to reach Europe, and has seen scores of deaths from migrants who attempt the crossing in boats that are barely seaworthy.
