ROME – Pope Francis of the Vatican Church has approved the declaration “Fiducia supplicans” issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith into pastoral blessings for couples in irregular situation but without rites in the form of marriage.
The delcaration distinguishes between ritual and spontaneous blessings, emphasizing pastoral openness without resembling marriage rites, even for couples in “irregular” situations.
Authored by Cardinal Victor Fernandez, the document explores blessings’ pastoral essence, expanding traditional understanding in line with Pope Francis’ pastoral vision.
It reflects a shift acknowledging the possibility of blessing couples not living by Christian moral doctrine, without endorsing their status or altering Church teachings on marriage.
The document underlines the sacrosanct nature of marriage, emphasizing the Church’s stance on lawful relations between a man and a woman within marriage. It aims to prevent confusion between authentic marriage and anything that contradicts it, reinforcing Catholic doctrine’s enduring stance.
Beyond marriage, the Declaration explores blessings for individuals, objects, and places, stressing that blessings must align with God’s design as expressed by Church teachings. While liturgical blessings on irregular or same-sex couples are deemed inappropriate, spontaneous blessings outside formal liturgical settings are seen as acts of devotion.
Requesting a blessing is viewed as a plea for God’s presence and assistance in leading a better life, irrespective of moral perfection. Pope Francis’ response supports blessings that avoid misconceptions about marriage, emphasizing God’s continual care for individuals despite their mistakes.
The document encourages ordained ministers to join in prayers for individuals seeking blessings, especially those in unions differing from marriage. However, it strictly disallows blending such blessings with civil union ceremonies or resembling wedding rituals, emphasizing alternative settings like shrines, priest meetings, or prayers in groups.
Ultimately, the Declaration reaffirms that seeking blessings, even in challenging situations, signifies a person’s openness to God’s grace and guidance, underscoring God’s willingness to bless individuals regardless of their circumstances.
