NIREC to el-Rufai, others: Your utterances can throw Nigeria into religious war
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), under the leadership of the Co- Chairmen, His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) say they are disturbed by the ugly trend occasioned by the hate speeches before and after the 2023 elections.
Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has been in the news recently telling Nigerians that he and his northern governors played the religious card in getting massive votes for the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ran for the February 25 general election under a Muslim Muslim ticket, championed by the likes of El-Rufai and many others.
But in a state, NIREC said weaponizing religion for selfish. political gains is capable of causing religious conflict in Nigeria.
While condemning the trend, NIREC said that the attitude of el-Rufai and others after the embattled election give the impression that one religion is superior to the other, stressing that Nigeria is a multi-religious state under God.
