STUTTGART -Mercedes believe their new Formula One reserve driver Mick Schumacher will be an important asset for the team and that he will “contribute a lot” to their development.
“The most important factor is his personality. He is an intelligent and talented young man,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said during a media event.
“I believe that if you can give him a safe environment to develop further, he can be a good racing driver with a regular cockpit in the future.”
Schumacher raced for Haas for two years after making his F1 debut with the team in 2021, but his contract was not extended for the 2023 season as the team decided to sign his countryman Nico Hülkenberg.
At Mercedes, Schumacher will be the third option, behind the regular duo of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
Wolff added Schumacher will be “very helpful” when in the car simulator thanks to his experience. The 2023 season starts on March 5 with the Bahrain Grand Prix.
