IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A new form of VISA scam has been uncovered at the Nigerian Embassy in Switzerland, where officials allegedly prepare the ground for immigration officials in Nigeria to extort individuals visiting Nigeria at point of departure and in the process denting the image of Nigeria.
Kibatu who visited Nigeria all the way from Switzerland has a very terrible story which leave a very sour taste about officials of Nigerian Embassy in Switzerland and Nigeria immigration at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Kibatu who has left Nigeria after experiencing delay at the MMIA, following attempt by Immigration officials to extort about N3million later downgraded to N80,000 from her said the Nigerian Ambassador in Switzerland issued her VISA for two months(8 weeks) to travel to Nigeria adding that she stayed in Nigeria for five weeks and decided to leave.
It was in the process of leaving that the immigration officials at the MMIA told her she had overstayed in Nigeria and would therefore not be allowed to leave Nigeria.
She showed them the VISA for two months and they said they don’t care and that to proceed on the journey she would have to part with USD 8,000 which is about N3 million.
She complained, and another officials took her aside and said she has to pay N80,000 and does not care whether the Ambassador issued her 2 months VISA but she insisted that her VISA is two months and when she insisted on calling the Ambassador in Switzerland they decided to scan her VISA.
Kibatu said her VISA showed overstay in Nigeria when she has actually spent just five weeks out of the two months or 8 weeks VISA she was given.
She even narrated that her colleague in Switzerland who went through similar ordeal confirmed that it has been a regular trend among immigration officials in Nigeria at point of departure in their quest to defraud travelers.
