PETER MAGYAR, the man shaking the foundations of Hungarian politics, has launched a blistering attack on the Budapest government, demanding to know which parts of Hungary they would hand over to Russia if the tanks rolled into Budapest.

In a move that signals a dramatic shift in the Hungarian political landscape, the rising star and chief rival to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has firmly aligned himself with Kyiv, calling Ukraine the “victim” of naked Russian aggression.

Addressing the controversial “peace at any price” rhetoric often pushed by Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party, Magyar didn’t hold back.

He challenged the government’s suggestion that Ukraine should cede land to Vladimir Putin to end the conflict, turning the tables with a stinging hypothetical:

”I would like to ask them: What would you do if Russia attacked Hungary? Which Hungarian counties would you be willing to give up?”

Magyar insisted that no outside power has the right to dictate terms to a sovereign nation under fire. “No one should tell them under what conditions they should enter a peace or sign a peace treaty,” he declared. “We cannot tell any country to give up their territory.”

Magyar also took a deep dive into the history books to highlight why Ukraine is so rightfully wary of Russian “guarantees.”

He pointed to the Budapest Memorandum, the 1994 agreement where Ukraine agreed to dismantle the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal in exchange for security assurances.

”Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal for guarantees, but those guarantees were violated repeatedly by Russia,” Magyar noted, insisting that any future peace deal must include “security and territorial guarantees that can actually be observed and kept.”

A New Challenger Appears
For over a decade, Viktor Orbán has been the “enfant terrible” of the European Union, frequently blocking aid to Ukraine and maintaining a “frenemy” relationship with the Kremlin.

Who is Peter Magyar?

The Insider: A former member of the Fidesz inner circle and ex-husband of former Justice Minister Judit Varga.

The Rebellion: He broke ranks earlier this year, accusing the Orbán government of deep-seated corruption.

The Momentum: His new “Tisza” party has seen a meteoric rise in polls, mobilizing hundreds of thousands of Hungarians who are fed up with the status quo.
Analysis: A Turning Tide?

For years, the Kremlin has counted on Hungary to be the “weak link” in NATO and the EU. Magyar’s comments suggest that if his movement succeeds, the “sane neighbor” relationship Ukraine craves might finally be within reach.

By framing the war not just as a Ukrainian struggle, but as a matter of Hungarian national sovereignty, Magyar is betting that voters prefer a leader who stands up to bullies—rather than one who tries to manage them.

Magyar’s straight talk is a breath of fresh air in a region stifled by Kremlin-friendly spin. If he can turn these words into votes, the map of European power is about to get a major shake-up.
