BERLIN – The number of people injured in anti-Muslim motivated offences is increasing in Germany, government data revealed.
Police authorities recorded 42 injured individuals nationwide in the first three quarters of this year due to crimes believed to have an Islamophobic motive, including four seriously injured.
Since incidents are sometimes not reported immediately or the motive is only recognized at a later point during an investigation, the figures are provisional.
In the same period in 2023, there were 28 slightly injured individuals.
The data was released by the government in a response to a parliamentary inquiry from Petra Pau, a lawmaker with the hard-left Die Linke party.
The figures paint a worrying picture, Pau said.
Although 117 cases were reported in the third quarter of this year, fewer than the 139 offences in the second quarter, an increasing brutality in the attacks is clear, she said.
“The rising number of victims of violence highlights how serious the threat is for people perceived as Muslim and how necessary decisive measures for protection and prevention are,” she said.
