
August 10, 2014 – Not less than 39 passengers and crew members were killed on Sunday morning when a small passenger Iranian plane crashed shortly after take-off in Tehran.
The plane crashed shortly after take-off from Mehrbad Airport.
Deputy Minister of Transportation Ahmad Majidi confirmed that 39 passengers and crew members lost their lives in the incident.
But state media reported that the Sepahan Airlines plane was heading to the eastern city of Tabas and crashed into Azad residential block on Mina 6 Boulevard adding that at least three people injured were taken to hospital with burns.
Mehrabad is located in a western suburb of Tehran and mainly functions as a domestic airport.
The last major airliner crash in Iran happened in January 2011, when an Iran Air Boeing 727 broke to pieces while attempting an emergency landing in a snowstorm in northwestern Iran, killing at least 77 people.
