ISTANBUL – Not less than 37,000 people have been confirmed killed in the earthquakes that rocked Turkiye and Syria.

A total of 31,643 deaths have been pulled out of the rubble in Turkey and 4,500 people have been  removed from the wreckage in Syria.

However, a 40 year survivor  was however rescued  alive from a 5-storey building in Islayiye area. There is hope that a mother and a child trapped within the building will also be rescued alive.

At Besn, a 60 year old survivor was pulled alive even as hope dims for survival after seven days of the rescue operation.

Aljazeera is reporting that there are signs that a mother and a child  trapped within the rubble in the 5-storey building is alive as search and rescue operators intensify their operation even with little equipment to rescue many trapped under the rubble.

The earthquakes occurred  last  Monday, 6th of February, 2023.

According to https://www.reliefweb.int  the earthquakes  measuring  7.8 degrees magnitude on the reichtal  scale struck 10 cities in southern Turkey near Syria’s northern border at about 4:17 am.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered about 33 km (20 miles) from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital. Tremors were felt as far away as Lebanon, Greece, Palestine and the island of Cyprus.

Another big earthquake, the second struck on the same day at around 1:24 pm local time of a magnitude of 7.5  largely in the same affected areas. According to SARC  the Syria earthquake hits Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartous governorates.
