November 27, 2014 – Not less than 361 people were murdered in Lagos in the last one year. They include 73 armed robbers and eight policemen who were killed in Lagos in a very daring gun battle between bandits and law enforcement officers and 280 civilians.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti made the revelation at the 8th town hall meeting on Security in Lagos.

According to him, the armed robbers were killed in crossfire between November 2013 and October 2014.

He announced that eight gallant police officers unfortunately lost their lives in the battle adding that 372 armed robbery incidents were foiled while 423 armed robbers were arrested.

Aderanti further disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force(NPF)was able to recover 255 arms and 4,043 ammunition and 560 stolen vehicles .

He said that 833 vehicles where stolen in Lagos in the last 12 months. According to him 358 vehicles were snatched by robbers at gun point while 468 others were stolen from where they were parked and seven others driven away.

The commissioner revealed that there were 68 armed robbery incidents in Lagos in the last 12 months while 280 people were murdered in Lagos in the same period.

He attributed the high rate of murder to gangsterism and rivalry, motor transport unionism, thuggery, youthful exuberance, unemployment and politics.

Speaking at the event organised by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Governor Babatunde said the logic behind the fund was to use resources to protect others.

“And that is where the real battle against crime begins, at the organic cutting edges of the agencies in the divisions and area commands within the states, with effective visible patrol presence and early intervention on a daily basis,” he said.

Fashola appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to continue to support the STF, saying that any setback allowed would have untold consequence.

“The work has not yet finished. There is more to be done. We have started some. We intend to provide modern patrol vehicles to every Police Division in Lagos and every Area Command.

“We intend to undertake prison service reforms by building a 21st century prison and we have completed the design.

“We are also developing the investigative capacity of law enforcement through training and support with the aim of providing them with forensic capabilities,” he said.

In his remarks, Executive Secretary, STF, Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey, lamented that more donations were received by the STF last year than 2014, noting that the fund was still able to contribute significantly to the security machines.

“Our total cash inflow was N249 million while donations in kind were to the value of N52.9 million. This marks a major reduction of 30 percent over 2013 receipts, and meant that we had to virtually diminish our reserves to meet some of the critical requests.

“Thus, while cash intake was as stated, expenditure was actually N333.577 million, a 22 percent. Increase over 2013. This just reflects. The changing landscape that we are confronting now,” he stated.

  • It is very well to paint a picture of a working police force.
Is there a way that the following questions could be answered.
How could there be armed robbery close to the police station near ago round about without police showing up?
Why would the police then demand 5 thousand Naira from the victim to report the crime. He told them his money and car was snatched at gun point. This happened March 2014.
Similarly, another brother’a house was attached at gun point in Ketu this November. His car and family belongings including cash were taken.Police arrived an hour after the incident and asked him to come to the station to report the robbery.
Upon arrival, he was asked the usual 5 thousand Naira to report the crime. He also has to do the same when he went to the zonal command.
Could the commissioner explain when victims will be treated as victims like in other civilised countries where there is law enforcement agency? What is the purpose of the 5 thousand Naira? To inflict more pain on victims who are already terrified.
I wonder if we can have a breakdown of the charges collected from victims so that the whole world can praise the Nigeria police force for their wonderful heroics and support o their citizens!
    When can we learn?
