PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Not less than 34 persons have been killed and dozens of others injured when a suicide bomber detonated explosive at a mosque in a police compound in Peshawar, Pakistan.

The attack took place when many worshippers were having their prayers in the morning. It is not clear how the attackers penetrated the security network at the mosque situated inside a major police station.

Many who are injured have been taken to hospitals in Pakistan for medical attention while the scene has been condoned off.

So far, the Taliban (TT) has claimed responsibility for the attack, noting that it carried out the attack retaliation for the murder of a senior Pakistani official killed in traffic last year.

The explosion created craters on the floor with books and chairs flung in different direction as part of the mosque collapsed due to the force of the blast.

According to reports, the Taliban in Pakistan  are allies of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and have played role in negotiation in the past.

The TTP is calling for release of their members from prison.
