COTONOU, Benin – Nigeria’s sensational Falconets cemented their status as West African queens after absolutely routing bitter rivals Ghana 3-0 yesterday to be crowned champions of the WAFU B U20 Girls Tournament in the Bénin Republic.
It was a devastating display of attacking football from the two-time FIFA World Cup silver-medallists, who had already beaten the same Ghanaian Princesses 3-1 just days before.
And two of Nigeria’s newest Goal-Getters were again on the scoresheet, with Janet Akekoromowei finding the net alongside teammate Alaba Olabiyi, to ensure the trophy was heading straight back to Abuja.
Janet at the Double!
The Nigerian side was pure fire, tearing into the Princesses from the first whistle at the Stade Omnisport d’Adjohoun.
It took just 17 minutes for the deadlock to be smashed, with the unstoppable Akekoromowei bagging her latest strike. She’s clearly got a taste for Ghanaian blood, having netted a brace against them just last Saturday!
The celebration barely died down before the Falconets struck again!
Just seven minutes later, in the 24th minute, Olabiyi put the ball in the back of the net, leaving the Ghanaians stunned and the score at a decisive 2-0 before most fans had finished their first cup of tea!
The dominant victory means the Falconets finish with a maximum nine points and an incredible plus eight goal difference—scoring a perfect three goals in every single game of the three-team tournament.
Trophy is Ours!
The victory leapfrogged the rampant Nigerians past Ghana’s Princesses, who could only manage six points from their other wins against the host nation.
While the Falconets are scheduled to play the host nation on Wednesday morning at the same venue, the encounter is now a mere ceremonial stroll in the park.
The trophy is already locked down, sealed, and waiting for the flight home! Keep an eye on these girls – they look like they’ll be taking the world by storm
