ABUJA — In a decisive move aimed at dispelling speculations of internal party realignments, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has declared that it will not endorse or participate in any political alliance or arrangement capable of undermining President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) governors also affirmed their total commitment to ensuring victory for all candidates fielded by the party across every tier of government during the next electoral cycle.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday following a closed-door meeting of the forum, the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the PGF, Senator Hope Uzodimma, emphasized that the APC state executives stand as a united front behind the President and the party structure.
Uzodimma noted that the meeting allowed the governors to review the state of the nation, evaluate political developments, and align their political trajectory directly with the reform vision of the Tinubu-led administration.
”The Progressive Governors Forum stands resolute in its commitment to the All Progressives Congress and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Uzodimma stated.
“We will not be part of, nor will we endorse, any alliance, political arrangement, or cross-party coalition that seeks to weaken or undermine the President’s re-election project or the success of APC candidates at any level in 2027.”
The resolutions of the APC governors come amid heightened political maneuvers across Nigeria’s political landscape, where key opposition leaders have periodically floated ideas of forming a mega-party or political coalition to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
Since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections, rumors of subterranean alliances involving prominent political figures across party lines have surfaced in the media. By issuing a firm, collective statement, the APC governors aim to shut down any perception of divided loyalty within the party’s primary power base—its state governors.
Under Nigeria’s political structure, state governors exercise significant influence over local party machinery, delegate mobilization, and electoral strategy.
The PGF’s unequivocal declaration effectively guarantees that the party’s grassroots infrastructure across APC-controlled states remains strictly dedicated to President Tinubu’s continuity agenda.
Focus on Reforms and Party Stability
Beyond electoral politics, the PGF reaffirmed its confidence in President Tinubu’s economic policies and national reform agenda.
Despite economic headwinds resulting from key policy shifts—such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification—the governors insisted that the long-term structural benefits of these measures are vital for national prosperity.
Uzodimma reiterated that state chief executives within the party are working in close synergy with the federal government to cushion the impact of economic reforms through targeted state-level interventions, agricultural investments, and infrastructure development.
He urged party members and Nigerians to ignore rumors of division within the APC, assuring that the party remains stable, disciplined, and focused on delivering governance while preparing a unified front for future elections.
The Abuja meeting was well-attended by APC governors from across the geopolitical zones, underscoring a collective resolve to protect the ruling party’s electoral advantage as political activities gradually build momentum toward 2027.
