LAGOS, Nigeria – Less than 100 days since President Donald Trump of the United States assumed office, his actions have been felt globally. One area his actions have  affected people is in the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a development that has sparked concern and criticism among experts and international observers.

President Donald Trump’s decision to undermine and weaken this vital agency has had far-reaching consequences, not only for the humanitarian and development efforts it supports but also for America’s role as a global leader in diplomacy.

USAID, established in 1961, has played a pivotal role in shaping America’s image as a benevolent and responsible global power. Through its programs and initiatives, USAID has provided crucial aid, expertise, and support to developing nations, addressing pressing issues such as poverty, healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. This agency has been a cornerstone of America’s soft power, fostering goodwill and mutual respect among nations.

However, under the Trump administration, USAID suffered a series of setbacks that threatened its effectiveness and integrity. The president’s policies and rhetoric reflected a shift away from traditional American values of international cooperation and humanitarianism. Instead, a “America First” approach dominated, prioritizing national interests over global responsibilities.

One of the most damaging actions taken by the Trump administration was the proposal to significantly reduce USAID’s budget and staff. This move, if fully implemented, would have severely hampered the agency’s ability to carry out its critical mission. The proposed budget cuts reflected a lack of understanding of the importance of foreign aid and its role in maintaining America’s global influence.

The consequences of these budget cuts extended beyond mere financial constraints. USAID’s role in coordinating and implementing development projects worldwide was significantly weakened. This not only affected the lives of vulnerable populations dependent on USAID’s support but also diminished America’s capacity to influence global affairs through constructive diplomacy.

Moreover, the Trump administration’s attempts to politicize and undermine the work of USAID raised concerns about the integrity and independence of the agency. Political appointees were installed in key positions, leading to a shift in focus towards politically expedient projects rather than those grounded in long-term development goals. This politicization eroded the trust and credibility that USAID had built over decades, making it increasingly difficult to operate effectively on the international stage.

The impact of Trump’s dismantling of USAID extends beyond the immediate loss of humanitarian aid and development support. It has also weakened America’s diplomatic leverage and soft power, hindering its ability to shape global narratives and address critical global challenges. Without a robust USAID, America’s voice in international forums and negotiations becomes less influential, ceding ground to other global powers.

The erosion of USAID’s capacity and influence has profound implications for global stability and development. As America turns inward, other nations may step in to fill the void, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape and challenging American interests. Furthermore, the loss of USAID’s expertise and resources undermines efforts to combat global issues such as climate change, pandemic preparedness, and economic inequality.

As we reflect on the Trump administration’s legacy, it is evident that the dismantling of USAID represents a shortsighted and myopic approach to foreign policy. The erosion of America’s global diplomacy and humanitarian leadership will have lasting consequences, both domestically and internationally. It is imperative that future administrations recognize the importance of USAID and reinvest in its mission, restoring America’s reputation as a force for good on the world stage.

Only by valuing and strengthening institutions like USAID can America continue to wield its soft power and shape a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. The responsibility lies with the American people and their leaders to reverse this troubling trend and recommit to the principles of international cooperation and humanitarianism that have defined America’s global leadership for generations.
