NUJ elects Alhassan Yahya as President, Oyetunde as Deputy President

OWERRI, Imo – The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ has elected a new president to run the association for the next few years. He is Alhassan Yahya.
He was elected at the eight national delegate conference in Owerri, Imo State at the weekend. Also elected is Dr. Bimbo Oyetunde, who emerged as the first female National Deputy President of the NUJ.
Other national officers of the union were also elected unopposed, including the National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who is the former Abia State Council Chairman.
Ronke Samo was re-elected unopposed as the Vice President of the B-Zone (Southwest).
The election, conducted amidst tight security, was chaired by Comrade Mike Ikeogwu as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and presided over by a representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
In his inaugural speech, Alhassan said his victory symbolises unity, stating, “No victor, no vanquished.”
Speaking on the election, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo congratulated the President and his deputy, emphasizing the importance of a free and responsible press in promoting transparency and accountability within government and the society at large.
He said the media plays a crucial role in informing the public and shaping advocacy for the rights of citizens.
The governor called for collaboration between journalists in the state and the Edo State Government. “Let us work together to create an environment that supports freedom of expression and truth”, his chief press secretary, Fred Itua said.
