WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden who is at the tail end of his government has authorised Ukraine to deploy landmines as part of efforts to stop Russia from further advancement into Ukraine.
Biden gave the approval few days after he authorised the use of American-made long-range missiles for strikes deep into Russia’s Kursk region. Six if the long range missiles were immediately deployed by President Volodymr Zelensky with five of them effectively shut down by Russia.
Recall that President Biden once labeled antipersonnel land mines as “reckless,” but is not signatory to ban on use of landmines as a result of long time effect on civilian population.
Russian currently uses landmines in Ukraine to stop the Ukrainian soldiers from further advancing into its strong hold.
There are also reports that Ukraine has been deploying older versions of landmines in its territory. The American landmines according to reports are easy to deploy and not as lethal as many of the landmines which have been outlawed but could immobilize soldiers and slow down their advances during warfare.
“While we have provided anti-tank mines throughout the conflict, the Biden-Harris administration will soon provide Ukraine with non-persistent antipersonnel land mines (APLs) as well,” a US official tol The Post.
