MUNICH – Animal rights group PETA have filed a criminal complaint against those responsible for the death of a horse at a recent race in Munich and called for a horse racing ban.
PETA said on Wednesday they filed the complaint to the Munich prosecution office on suspicion of violating the animal welfare act.
The authorities could not immediately confirm having received the complaint. Four-year-old mare Schwarz Blau fell during a November 10 race in Munich. Sascha Multerer, managing director of the Munich racing club, said that “despite all veterinary efforts – everything really was tried – the mare had to be put down.”
PETA’s Jana Höger named horse racing “an exploitative industry that makes massive profits from animals that are capable of suffering.
“The sensitive animals are forced by brute force to take part in these races and are driven to perform at dangerous levels against their will.
“It is high time to introduce a legal ban on horse racing,” she said.
